Andy Warhol once said, “I like money on the wall." The Pop artist would likely be pleased that his six-foot wide dollar bill canvas, One Dollar Bill (Silver Certificate), from 1962, found a buyer to pay $32.8 million at Sotheby's London on Wednesday.
The work was Warhol's first and only hand-painted currency before turning to a silkscreen technique. His silkscreen 200 One Dollar Bills brought $43.7 million at Sotheby's in 2009.
The hand-painted dollar bill sailed past an estimate of $26.5 million. It was based on a photograph of currency that Warhol commissioned from his friend Edward Wallowitch, according to Sotheby's.
One Dollar Bill was a top sale during the week's contemporary art auctions in London. Sotheby's total came to $203.6 million. One casualty: A highly-touted work by Francis Bacon, Study for a Pope I, brought no bids. It was expected to fetch between 25 million and 35 million pounds.
Christie's pulled in $150.1 million with several artists records. Ai Weiwei reached a record price of $5.4 million in a $28.6 million Phillips sale.
