An unknown number of prints from Andy Warhol's "Campbell's Soup Cans" series were stolen from the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri last week.
The chair of the museum's board, Sally Scheid, said: "We're shocked and totally saddened," reports the Springfield News-Leader.
The museum was broken into and the theft occurred between 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8:45 a.m. Thursday, said police spokeswoman Lisa Cox, adding that the FBI and Interpol have been notified.
An assessment of how many works were stolen is underway along with the police investigation. The museum has stayed open, but closed one exhibition — The Electric Garden of Our Minds: British/American Pop — which included a full suite of Warhol's famed serigraphs of Campbell's Soup Cans, according to its website.
“The museum is working with the proper authorities and being proactive in our security efforts as we remain open to the public. We are confident that the measures we taking will protect the museum’s treasures, while still making art accessible to our community,” said Director Nick Nelson in a statement.
