Franz Marc, Foxes, sold for $57 million.
CHRISTIE'S

A three-part auction hosted both in London and Shanghai totalled $334 million in sales for 20th and 21st century art on Tuesday. The Christie's auction marked the first ever time that London's mid-season evening sale included a section of sales taking place in Asia.

The top lot was a closely-watched Franz Marc painting from 1913 that was restituted last year from Düsseldorf's Kunstpalast to the heirs of its former owner, the Nazi-persecuted Jewish businessman and banker Kurt Grawi. Marc's Die Füchse (Foxes) went for £42.7 million ($57 million) to a phone bidder, far exceeding its expected price of around £35 million ($46.8 million). The artist's previous auction record was $24.2 million for Weidende Pferde III (1910) which sold at Sotheby’s London in 2008.

A key proponent of German Expressionism, Marc's signature works depicted animals rendered in bright colors. He was drafted into the German Army during World War I and died at the Battle of Verdun in 1916. Later, his work was deemed "degenerate" by the Nazis and over a hundred works were seized from museums.
