About the Artist
Swiss artist Paul Christener’s hazy landscape photographs capture the atmospheric conditions that occur at the edge of daylight. Traveling to untouched, remote locations only accessible by foot, the photographer endures harsh physical conditions in order to document the enveloping silence of the natural world. Diffused light, curtains of rain, and falling snow eliminate harsh shadows and highlights in the tonal gray compositions, lending a solemn sense of melancholy to otherwise magnificent vistas.
In Forgotten Watertank, Christener documents the remnants of human intervention in the landscape, the cloudy scene juxtaposing the natural and the manmade. In Search of Silence marks the beginning of a quest for solitude as a jagged mountain peak emerges from the mist, its threatening potential palpable. Christener’s evocatively titled work The Only Noise Came From Rain indicates the continuation of the artist’s journey to find tranquility in the untouched landscape. Finally, in Silence, a dramatic view blurring land, sea, and sky, the artist finds peace at the edge of the world.
