Grogan & Company

Among the high quality selection of fine art, jewelry, decorative arts, and Oriental carpets to be offered at Grogan & Company's December 6th action, they are poised to present a silver necklace made by Alexander Calder (1898-1976) for his great-niece, Nanette Calder Hayes Sexton (1943-2015). While most renowned for his sculptures and mobiles, Calder was a highly celebrated and sought after jeweler who frequently gifted pieces to his nearest and dearest, among them this necklace. Nanette, named for her great grandmother, Nanette Lederer Calder, was born in Berkeley, California and grew up next door to her grandmother, Margaret 'Peggy' Calder Hayes, Calder's sister. 'Uncle Sandy', as Calder was affectionately called by his great-niece, visited frequently. The two enjoyed a close bond, revolving around Calder's artwork and Nan's deep reverence and appreciation thereof. Over the years, Calder gifted Nan numerous works of art, often personalized with dedications or designed with Nan in mind. This necklace, among Nan's most treasured gifts from Uncle Sandy, was left by Nan to her dear friend upon her death in February of 2015. The one-of-a-kind necklace is composed of silver wire links and hammered silver scrolls in the form of stylized musical notes. It bears a $40,000-60,000 estimate.

In addition to the Calder necklace, Grogan & Company will be offering jewelry from the collection of New York City designer Lynn Chase, fine art from Boston's Rabb family collection, and decorative arts from a prominent Newport, Rhode Island family collection. Highlights include lots by George Caleb Bingham, Guy Wiggins, Gustave Baumann, Orville Bulman, Antonio Jacobsen, Cartier, Tiffany & Company, Verudra, and Seaman Schepps. Exhibition begins Thursday, December 3rd. Online catalogue available at www.groganco.com.
