NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Gordana Tomic in Heaven and Earth. The exhibition opens April 5, 2018 and runs through April 25, 2018 with an opening reception on Thursday, April 5 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.
About the Artist
Gordana Tomic’s large-scale, abstract works are at once energetic, gestural, and profound in meaning. Working in predominantly acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, Tomic utilizes a monochrome palette and an abstract expressionist gesture that transcribes raw, unsullied emotion into highly saturated and autographically textured compositions. Upon first glance, the majority of Tomic’s oeuvre appears altogether abstract; however, in many of her works, the artist adroitly conceals figurative elements within an all-over composition brimming with color and texture.
In works such as Poseidon Palette (2017), layered tones of navy, cobalt blue, and white writhe, splash, and churn at the upper register of the composition, cascading downwards in weighty, vertical drips of pigment. In the center of the canvas, Poseidon’s trident is faintly visible, seamlessly blended with its abstract surroundings. Inspired by her Mediterranean background, Tomic explains: “I truly believe that all the seas are mine, like I named my latest exhibition. I have a purpose in this Universe to try many techniques, to touch every emotion and bring it to the canvas as it is, as it should be, as I read it and feel it.” The artist currently resides in Belgrade, Serbia.
