Western Waters is a refreshing exhibition capturing rushing waters, fowl, and fishermen by featured painters and printmakers Peter Campbell, Joel Ostlind,  Sherrie York, Dan Young, and Ewoud de Groot. Artists’ Reception on Wednesday, August 29th from 5 to 7PM, with 5% of purchases at the event donated to the Roaring Fork Conservancy.

Peter Campbell moved to Colorado after studying at the Savannah College of Art & Design. When Campbell paints, he creates a direct connection with the landscape, as he seeks to convey an intimate and personal reaction to nature. By limiting his palette and omitting details, Peter effectively creates an atmosphere and dream-like mood, open to each viewer’s interpretation. His oils capture the reflection of dawn, the quiet of snow, and the rush of Spring.

Joel Ostlind is a Wyoming native and self-taught artist who spent much of his life herding cattle on horses throughout the American West. This cowboy always carried a sketchbook to record his intimacy with the land in exquisite detail, developing a style that could be compared to Rembrandt’s expressive draftsmanship, and paves a strong foundation for his copper plate etchings representing Western life.

Sherrie York is a Colorado printmaker, painter and draughtswoman who recently moved her studio to Maine. York is an accomplished artist with an international reputation for lyrical and expressive works on paper. With a keen eye for detail, York inspires beauty and mystery in her nature-focused linocuts. Her printmaker’s eye is drawn to intricate flora, the interaction of birds with water, and the patterns across land and seascapes.

Dan Young lives in Silt, Colorado and studied at the Colorado Institute of Art. Young captures the natural feel and sensitive light of Colorado’s valleys, plains and peaks through his masterful and adaptive use of oil paint. Young has mastered the techniques of painting on location, in all seasons, and along the way has built a following among art collectors and a reputation as one of Colorado’s premier landscape artists.

Ewoud de Groot (pronounced A-VOWED) lives and works in Egmond aan Zee, a coastal village in the Northern Netherlands. From birds of prey flying at the viewer to serene scenes of Sandhill cranes, egrets, and loons, to big wildlife such as elk, de Groot paints his passions: birds, game, water and light. His images are refined, elegant compositions, paired with dreamy backgrounds of “pulsating, magnetic shimmer.”
