- LOUIS, Mo. – Several collections of Brilliant Period Cut Glass featuring many rare, beautiful, and stunning pieces will come up for bid on Saturday, May 12th, when Woody Auction holds a major public auction at the Crowne Plaza St. Louis Airport Hotel, located at 11228 Lone Eagle Drive in St. Louis, starting promptly at 9:30 am Central time. The hotel is situated not far off exit 235-A of Interstate 70.
“This auction is the continuation of the Bill Chandler collection, boasting many important pieces, and will also include the addition of the Stanley and Ruth Gotliffe collection out of New Jersey,” said Jason Woody of Woody Auction, based in Douglass, Kansas. “We believe attendees will be surprised and wowed by the amount of quality color cut to clear glass. Many large pattern trays will also be offered.”
As with all sales held by Woody Auction, every item will be sold to the highest bidder, without reserve.
An example of the overall quality of the catalog can be seen in lot 200, a pair of Brilliant Period Cut Glass (BPCG) vases by Dorflinger – one cranberry and one green, both cut to clear – in an unnamed but gorgeous pattern featuring engraved floral with hobstar, vesical and nailhead diamond highlights. The pattern of the vases matches exactly a vase featured in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, presented to the museum by Dorflinger & Sons in 1903. The exceptionally rare vases each stand 11 ¾ inches tall.
Another star lot in the vase category promises to be the rare and colorful 10-inch-tall BPCG turquoise cut to clear vase with crosscut diamond, strawberry diamond and fan motif and scalloped hobstar foot.
Other vases of interest will include a scarce example in the Rose Diamond pattern by Meriden, 11 ¾ inches tall with a hobstar base and step-cut neck, of exceptional quality; and a BPCG pedestal crescent vase, signed Libbey in the Herringbone pattern, with a large scalloped petticoat hobstar foot. The vase, at 12 ½ inches tall, is the largest size in one of the rarest shapes.
Authentic American Brilliant Period Cut Glass round pattern trays will be offered in abundance, with many having exquisite blanks and cutting. Lots will include an 11-inch tray, signed Hawkes in the Panel pattern; an 11 ¾ inch tray in the Waldorf pattern by Clark (aka the Quatrefoil & Rosette pattern); and a 10-inch tray, signed Hawkes, in the Lattice and Rosette pattern.
Additional BPCG round pattern trays will feature a 12-inch tray in the True Trellis pattern by Egginton, patented on Feb. 4, 1908; and a 15 ½ inch tray signed Libbey in the Diana pattern, of superior quality and outstanding size; a 14-inch tray in the Wedgemere pattern by Libbey. Also up for bid will be a 17 ½ inch by 10 ¼ inch BPCG ice cream tray, signed Taylor Brothers in the Bellevue pattern, of top quality.
Brilliant Period Cut Glass pitchers will be highlighted by a rare water pitcher of high quality in the Panel pattern by Hawkes, with a triple notched handle and hobstar base, 10 ¼ inches in height; and a cranberry cut to clear pitcher in the Savoy pattern by Pairpoint, with double notched handle, hobstar base, Gorham #S130 sterling spout and collar, and quality blank. The pitcher stands 10 ¾ inches tall.
Other highlight lots will include a BPCG ice cream set in the Star pattern by Meriden, with a 14 ¾ inch round tray and eight 7-inch plates; a scarce BPCG banana bowl, signed Libbey in the Marcella pattern, one of the great rarities; and an equally hard-to-find bowl in the Imperial pattern by Hawkes, measuring 4 inches by 9 ¼ inches.
