Much ado about Logan!

A painting at Matthew's Galleries auction, creating quite a stir, is a energetic plein air canvas by California artist Maurice Logan (1886-1977) titled "Shore Scene." The 20" x 24" oil was consigned four months ago for the gallery's March 12th fine arts auction, with a very conservative estimate of $10,000-15,000. Since that time Bonhams of San Francisco hammered down a smaller and rather sketchy canvas by Logan for $74,500. Matthew W. Gerber, gallery director, since decided to raise the estimate to $30,000-50,000 in light of the success of Bohnams sale--- but has retained the reserve, which of course is below $10,000. The canvas is faintly signed lower right, and retains an original label inscribed with the title and artist name on reverse. Without a doubt, the painting is on the upper end for Logan in quality, yet the question is, has the California plein air market come out of its doldrums, or will the painting go for a bargain, or perhaps a record price?
