LYNBROOK, N.Y. – A summer sale spectacular featuring over 700 lots of historical items, militaria, posters, rare books, rock ‘n’ roll, ocean liner memorabilia, aviation collectibles and more will be held Wednesday, July 23rd, by Philip Weiss Auctions, online (at Proxibid.com and Invaluable.com) and in the firm’s gallery at 74 Merrick Road, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
Historical items will include an important collection of U.S. Revolutionary War and historical newspapers, a highly collectible grouping of 80 original JFK eulogy speeches, and a needlework (or tapestry) from the early 20th century women’s suffrage movement. Vintage posters, always a huge hit, will feature examples from World Wars I and II, early movies, travel and advertising.
Military collectibles will include a Civil War grouping from the Company E, 15th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, a Model 1861 Naval Colt conversion pistol, an original and rare Civil War balloon photo taken by the legendary photographer Mathew Brady (1822-1896), uniforms, patches, hats, a collection of cartes de visite (calling cards carried in an etui), tintypes and more.
Advertising memorabilia will be headlined by a small archive of cigar inner proof labels, with several unique pieces (such as “His Master’s Voice,” Billy Bowlegs” and “Tahoma”). The ocean liner memorabilia will feature a chessboard made out of actual wood from the wreck of the RMS Titanic, plus a great selection of models, prints, signs, books, collectible items and much more.
Rare books will include a copy of The Old Man and the Sea, signed and inscribed by Ernest Hemingway, first-editions by Jack London, Walter Schnackenberg’s Ballet and Pantomime portfolio (1937) with 15 of 22 plates depicting figures and costumes from an edition of 850, and a collection of Kate Greenaway items from 1883-1887 (almanacs, calendars and a signed note).
Also to be sold July 23rd will be a zuchetto (or small, ecclesiastical skullcap, worn by the now-sainted Pope John Paul II and gifted to the consignor in 1998; proceeds from the sale of this item will be donated to charity), a 19th century Indian Princess cigar store statue, and a pen and ink soup can drawing (not a lithograph) by the iconic Pop Artist Andy Warhol, signed by the artist.
A marvelous aviation collection will include items pertaining to the famed female aviator Amelia Earhart (including her autograph, plus the autographs of other early flyers), a typed letter signed by Arrigo Balboni with a piece of plane fabric from the racing Gee Bee that killed Cecil Allen in 1935, a rare copy of the aviation book History and Practice by J. Wise, and many other items.
An autograph book, loaded with great and recognizable names, will come under the gavel. Rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia will feature a block of 15 unused tickets from the Beatles’ last concert ever in the United States (at Candlestick Park in 1966), and signed record albums from the Debbie Levitt collection: Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Simon & Garfunkel and many more.
Hollywood memorabilia will include a Judy Garland magazine cover illustration by De Frange (circa 1940s), a Rudolph Valentino magazine cover illustration, a window card for the film The Four Horsemen starring Valentino, and an important photo and document signed by Valentino in 1923. Also sold will be important archive of Jeanloup Sieff photos and Burke Sweeney artwork.
Philip Weiss Auctions will take August off to rest and re-group, but they’ll be back in September with two auctions. The first, on Wednesday, Sept. 10 (at 1 p.m.), will be an estate sale featuring paintings, pottery, porcelain, perfume bottles, bronzes and more. Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 30 (also at 1 p.m.), an auction packed with sports, comics, comic art and animation art will be held.
The Sept. 30 event promises to be a blockbuster. Already consigned are an original hand-colored Krazy Kat daily strip by Herriman (presented to the artist Lee Falk), original Don Larsen cartoon art, The Far Side daily strips, a LeRoy Neiman watercolor cartoon illustration, a John Dempsey original cartoon illustration, and two complete original comic art stories from Shazam #9 (1974).
Animation lots sold on Sept. 30 will feature production cels, serigraphs, limited-editions and more. Comics will include examples from the Silver Age, the Golden Age and more.
