When the colors of Miró and the shapes of Pollock were filtered through patterns of inner visions, Antonia Pia Gordon is creating her dazzling surreal-poetic abstractions. Those, looking for something exciting at The Miami Art Expo but at the same time meditative, cannot ignore Gordon’s recent series “Spheres and Vortices“ and “Money and Love”. The artist, who is living in the United Arab Emirates, is delighted to be selected for the show in Miami, hosted at Nina Torres Fine Art. The 8,000 square feet gallery space across the street of Margaret Pace Park is located at 1800 North Bayshore Drive, in a high-rise building adorned with fountains and with breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach and the Port of Miami.
The juried, contemporary exhibition is featuring an international slate of emerging artists. So what is it? What makes Gordon’s work so unique and extraordinary at the Miami Art Expo show? No doubt, it is this hybrid language where Modernism meets the Contemporary through inner and outer journeys and vibrant visions become reality.
Feeling tension, but also harmony and inner freedom during the creative process, Gordon explains the aesthetic concept of her series “Spheres and Vortices”: “Vortices represent the twist and turns, heights and depths, quiet and stormy moments of life – they are the maps of my life, the atlas of my soul. Phases of life and perception are governed by a general mood – similar to how the first fundamental coat of paint on the canvases of my vortices series influence your first impression of these paintings. What was important now just soon loses its importance.“ “Spheres and Vortices” with up to 12 layers of acryl paint are abstract at a distance and integrate a rich variety of colours, ranging from psychedelic via dark delvings to meditative gold and silver combinations.
Born in Germany, Antonia Pia Gordon studied Art, Design, Psychology, Literature and French at the University of Sorbonne, Paris. She graduated in Business Management in Zurich, Switzerland and at the European Business Institute INSEAD in Fontainebleau. Influenced by her professional career, she has been involved in cross cultural media world, as well as the art market and private and public collections.
Reflecting upon her rich cultural heritage, she finally returned to creating her own artworks. Gordon’s work intend to serve as a guide for the viewer to navigate through a visual territory that she has made public and consider worth sharing. As with other map makers throughout history, she is driven by the love of discovery, combined with an unquenchable thirst for new frontiers.
The discovery of (mental) frontiers is also a subject in Gordon’s series “Money and Love”, where the composition is divided in Red and Blue, rising and falling hearts including an assemblage of money notes and Barbie dolls. About “Money and Love” Gordon explains with her tongue in the cheek humor: “The irresistible never ending search for true love makes the world go round. Money breeds greed and envy and makes even those who believe they live like modest saints, forget their morals. I don’t want to waste my energy any longer in support of the ever-present choirs of false modesty. I admit to being intrigued by the seducing power of money, love and sex. I want to taste and enjoy the stunning experiences and joys that lie beyond hypocrisy.”
Gordon’s artworks transcribe moments of self-transformation into a philosophical tale. The emphasis on the cycle of life is represented by a process of decomposition and reconstruction. But Gordon also recreates a creative chaos in order to expose the ephemeral nature of human existence.
In this sense Antonia Pia Gordon’s independent artistic life and her creative process resembles a journey through a metaphysical reality of space and time to a metaphysics of space and (vortex) motion. Bon Voyage to the magic world of Antonia Pia Gordon.
