NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of RABARAMA in From Italy with Love. The exhibition opens June 14, 2018 and runs through June 21, 2018 with an opening reception on Thursday, June 14 from 6-8 pm. About the Artist
Italian sculptor RABARAMA creates richly patterned figurative sculptures using diverse materials including terracotta, bronze, and marble. Her figures, often contorted into awkward positions, draw upon the legacy of classical Italian sculpture. Expressive and emotive, these works convey attitudes through densely layered, decorative patterning and vibrant color as well as pose. Her subjects are sometimes idealized but more frequently realistic and individualized through their idiosyncratic facial features and precarious postures.
In a series of bronze and gold leaf sculptures titled Swami, RABARAMA depicts the same crouched form covered with varying patterns. Honeycombs puzzle pieces, linear marks, and crossword-like designs cover unknown and unidentifiable bodies. The colorful, gilded surfaces of the bodies clash with the cowering, stooped, and isolated nature of the pose, creating a strong tension between surface and reality, interior and exterior.
RABARAMA’s works were featured at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 and in Paris, Florence, Cannes, Miami, Shanghai. Her works are part of the permanent collections of the Shanghai Sculpture Space and the Copelouzos Museum of Athens.
