This exhibition reveals the current inquiries and influences of Anderson Ranch’s four Artistic Directors:

In his latest ceramic works, Doug Casebeer searches for meaning among the rural archetypal forms of the western landscape and from many years of experiencing different global cultures. Relationships among the ideas of storage, shelter, nourishment and home come together in an effort to understand the world around us.

Jose Ferreira investigates hidden content within the landscape, capturing the essence of collective histories through images taken on extensive walks. In photographs, drawings, texts and sculptures, he scrutinizes the stories and strategies that miners used in the American West to survive the harshness of their environment and endure strained social relations.

Using the traditional printmaking/painting technique of pochoir, Liz Ferrill portrays the vast solitude of the American landscape in her work, particularly places that seem cold but emotionally charged, dehumanizing yet full of personal experience. She explores these spaces in a sincere quest for beauty, while at the same time acknowledges their tension, functionality and reflection of human behavior.

With storytelling and narrative central to her work, Andrea Wallaceresearches issues surrounding the relationship between individuals and the construction of identity. She is interested in intersections: child and adult, women and men, the dualities of living, success and failure. Her photographic portraits explore the physical and psychological space that we inhabit simultaneously.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Doug Casebeer
Doug Casebeer has been the Artistic Director of Ceramics at Anderson Ranch Arts Center for over 32 years, where he is also the Associate Director. He received his M.F.A. from Alfred University followed by several years working for the United Nations in Kingston, Jamaica. Doug is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and travels worldwide to teach, lecture and exhibit his artwork.

Jose Ferreira
Ferreira is the Artistic Director of Sculpture at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. He studied Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa, earning an M.F.A. in Fine Art, Sculpture. In 2002 he began working as a Research Fellow in Fine Art Digital Media, at the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom. From 2006 to 2013 he was full-time faculty in the Sculpture Department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Contributions to the art world have been recognized through prestigious grants and awards including, The Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development, The London Arts Council, The Human Science Research Council, and The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Elizabeth Ferrill
A native of Seattle, Wash., Elizabeth received her B.F.A. from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, and her M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. The use of the stencil resonates deeply within the content of her work, flickering between the beauty found in pattern and a kind of disorienting hypnotic realism. Elizabeth has had solo and two-person exhibitions nationally and internationally including at Planthouse, N.Y.; Harvey Meadows Gallery, Aspen, Colo.; COOP Gallery, Nashville, Tenn.; Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, Neb.; Backspace, Peoria, Ill.; Artspace, Reno, Nevada, Virginia Tech Armory Gallery, Blacksburg, Va.; and 5x6x9 Gallery, Berlin, Germany. She was an artist in residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.

Andrea Wallace
Andrea Wallace is the Artistic Director of Photography & New Media at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Before coming to the Ranch, she worked as Assistant Professor at Lake Forest College and Willamette University. Her film, Rochell and Brian, a documentary about teenage pregnancy, premiered at the New York International Independent Film Festival. She exhibits nationally and internationally with numerous shows throughout the Americas, Europe, China and the Middle East. Andrea’s work is represented by Gallery Kayafas, Boston, Mass.
