It’s always hard to move a business away from its long-time home base, but after decades in Manhattan, Bill and Rob Roland moved Roland Auctions to Glen Cove in February this year. The move has been propitious, proof of which is the size and strength of the September 22 auction, to be held on premises shortly.

Almost all of the 900+ lots in the auction are from private collections and estates. The sale begins with a strong 200+ lot collection of Georgian, Victorian and modern jewelry, including a pair of Van Cleef & Arpels-style lapis “butterfly” earrings with diamond decorations, a pair of Tiffany & Co. oval 18K yellow gold earrings inset with citrines, and a fine French Beaux Arts 18K yellow gold oval brooch, inset with a turquoise, pendant three freshwater pearls beneath a bow. (Lots 2,129 and 19). Additionally, this section of the auction includes several gold and sterling mask-theme items designed and hand-cast by artist Edith Borax Morrison (lot 51, 99, 100, 124, 125 and 127).

Among the highlights of the Asian section of the sale is a collection of unusual items from Central Asia, including a hand-painted Tibetan silk apron, a collection of Central Asian and African currency/trade jewelry, including a pair of Afghan silver and agate cuffs (lots 257 and 296). A fine Chinese Qing Dynasty Jade Ornament/breast plate, lot 264A, and a fine hair ornament, lot 288, are the highlights of this section of the auction.

288. Chinese Qing Dynasty jeweled gilt bronze ornament. [6 x 1 5/8 x 3/8 (dia) inches]. $400-600.

The group of modern/contemporary art in this auction is particularly strong, including several works by pop and minimalist artists such as work by John Kacere, from the collection of Dr. Richard T. and Odile Stern. Roland is holding a separate auction September 25, 2018, of several important artworks from the Stern’s collection, by Larry Rivers, Christo and Jean-Claude Christo, and other artist’s who used their own artwork to pay their dental bills to Dr. Stern.

Property of other consignors is equally of note, including a fine bronze brutalist abstract sculpture by Ernst Neizvestny (Russian, 1926-2016), titled "Orpheus". That sculpture is expected to realize $12,000-15,000 (lot 401). Within the art section, there are several works with night as their subject, including Karl Schrag’s (1912 - 1995), “Night Wind,” an expressionist monotype (lot 829); and two mood-filled New York City scenes by bridges by Glen C. Henshaw (1880-1946), lots 418 and 419 in the sale.

In the classic furniture and decorations area, offerings range from American federal-period sideboards to Danish modern chairs, and silver ranges from a William Gale & Son coin silver spoon (lot 460) and forward.
