Davenport and Shapiro Fine Art will offer an early drip work (c. 1948-1952) by American artist Rolph Scarlett at the upcoming Boston International Fine Art Show (BIFAS) November 15-18.
"Understanding of Scarlett's breadth of talent and contribution to the growth of early modernism in this country continues to grow," said gallery co-director Howard Shapiro. "It is a little known fact that Scarlett painted with Pollock at was then called the Museum of Non-Objective Art, now the Guggenheim. He exhibited his drip works at the Whitney in 1951." The work on exhibit comes from the estate of Sam Esses, a major collector of Scarlett's work.
Davenport and Shapiro offers historic modern and contemporary art at its East Hampton, NY gallery.
The gallery will also offer an early Impressionist landscape by American painter James Knox and another Impressionist work by John Costigan. It will also offer work by acclaimed second generation Abstract Expressionist painter Harriette Joffe.
"People today like to mix it up a bit," said Shapiro. "We understand that."
