(LYNBROOK, N.Y.) – An original 1920s hand-colored Judge Magazine page by the renowned illustrator Dr. Seuss, a complete set of 1934 Goudey baseball cards (including Lou Gehrig), a championship ring owned by the late baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti, and an original page from Walt Disney Comics and Stories, double signed by Carl Barks, will all be sold on Saturday, Sept. 21.

These are just a few of the estimated 700 lots that will cross the block at Philip WeissAuctions, in the firm’s gallery located at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook. The auction will be dedicated to sports items, comics, comic art and animation. Action will kick off at 10 a.m. (EST). Internet bidding will be facilitated by Proxibid.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be taken.

“I can’t think of a better way to kick off the fall auction season than with a sale packed with fresh to the market merchandise in the categories collectors flock to,” said Philip Weiss, owner of Philip Weiss Auctions, a firm still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, which forced a move from Oceanside to nearby Lynbrook. “Auctions like this are a real shot in the arm for us.”

The 1934 Goudey baseball card set is certain to spark a fierce bidding war, as it is complete and uniformly graded PSA 7. Also sold will be a complete original-owner Topps 1952 baseball card set with many high grade high-number cards, a complete 1956 Topps set, a near-complete 1951 Bowman baseball card set and a near-complete 1933 Goudey baseball card set.

From the estate of the late Commissioner of Baseball Bart Giamatti will come a 1987 St. Louis Cardinals National League Championship ring, his wife’s 1989 All-Star ring with sapphire and diamond center, a monogrammed and inscribed Waltham pocket watch and a copy of the confidential Pete Rose report that led to Rose’s ban from baseball, inscribed to Mrs. Giamatti.

Other sports items will include a rare 1930 signed Bobby Jones Currier & Ives print, an exceedingly scarce American Caramel “Shoeless” Joe Jackson baseball card, a 1942 “Pride of the Yankees” signed baseball (including Babe Ruth, Bill Dickey and others), a single-signed Ruth ball, and an original-owner T-206 collection (215 cards, including many Hall of Famers).

The comic and illustrated art category will feature an original Richard Scarry illustration, while animation art will include strong pieces from a 1930s Disney animator’s collection, such as a production set-up from Three Little Wolves (1936) and two Peter Pan concept illustrations by David Hall. Also sold will be original concept art by Eyvind Earleand work by other artists.

The auction will feature Part 1 of a collection of 300-plus pieces of animation art from a New England estate, original Eldon Dedini illustration art for Playboy, and many marvelous production cels (a Filmation Batman cel, Snow White and a Jose Carioca cel with Courvoisier background). Also sold will be two original Bruce Bairnsfather Judge Magazine illustrations.

Returning to sports merchandise, the sale will also feature a 500 Home Run Club multi-signed artist’s proof lithograph (with JSA letter), a 1947 scorecard signed by Jackie Robinson, a 1969-70 Topps basketball cards complete set (graded), signed photos, signed balls, signed bats, signed Hall of Fame cards, hundreds of graded sports cards from the 1950s-1990s and more.

Non-sports cards and card sets will include a 1938 R1 Goudey Action Gum complete set, a 1955 Topps Rails & Sails complete set, complete sets of 1956 Topps Davy Crockett (orange and green back), a 1957 Topps Robin Hood complete set, a 1958 Zorro complete set, a 1958 Topps TV Westerns complete set and more. New consignments were being added at press time.

Comics will feature a near-complete run of Amazing Spider-Man issues (#2-441, to include annuals) and a high-grade copy of Captain America #59. Comic art will include a pair of original Peanuts daily comic strips by the late legendary illustrator Charles Schulz, an original 1929 Felix the Cat daily strip, original Mandrake the Magician comic art pages from 1959, original Phantom comic strip dailies, Sunday pages from the 1950s to the 1960s and more.

Previews will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 10-5; Thursday, Sept. 19, from 10-8; Friday, Sept. 20, from 10-8; and Saturday, Sept. 21, the date of sale, from 8:30 a.m. until the first gavel falls at 10 a.m. The in-house buyer’s premium of 15 percent and the online premium of 20 percent can be reduced by 2 percent if invoices are paid in full within ten business days of sale.

Philip Weiss Auctions has two other big sales lined up for October. On Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m., the firm will offer Part 1 of a 4,000-piece toy vehicle collection (many of them still in the box), a terrific selection of American Flyer and Lionel toy trains, mint-in-the-box battery-operated toys, a nice grouping of tin litho penny toys and high-grade Britains and other soldiers.

Then, on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m., Philip Weiss Auctions will hold a sale featuring books, autographs, war posters, maritime, rock ‘n’ roll, shaving mugs and historical items. Highlights will include a letter handwritten by Lee Harvey Oswald, a 1949 LIFE Magazine signed by Jackson Pollock and an 1848 Peter Force printing of the Declaration of Independence.
