LYNBROOK, N.Y. - Over 500 lots of high-end collectibles – to include sports uniforms worn by Reggie Jackson, Michael Jordan and Thurman Munson, a collection of railroad passes given to Brigham Young (the 19th century leader of the Latter Day Saints movement), and a signed photo of Walt Disney – will come up for bid on Thursday, May 21st, at Philip Weiss Auctions.
The mid-week discovery auction will be held in Philip Weiss Auctions' gallery, located at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, starting at 10 a.m. Eastern time, and online at Proxibid.com. The sale will feature sports items, advertising, historical memorabilia, rare books, ocean liner collectibles, several hundred lots of military items and Part 3 of a big ice cream and soda fountain collection.
The Reggie Jackson game-worn uniform is signed by the slugger and is from the 1974 season, when he played on the World Champion Oakland Athletics and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The late New York Yankees' catcher Thurman Munson's game-worn jersey is from 1971 – a rare and early example. It is restored and comes with a letter from the original owner.
The Michael Jordan game-worn uniform is from the 1997-1998 season – his final championship season as a member of the Chicago Bulls. Both this uniform and the Reggie Jackson uniform come with letters of authenticity from Mears, the sports authentication service. Also sold will be a Wilson pitching wedge golf club from Jordan's own collection, plus other sports-related items.
The collection of 34 railroad passes – all issued to Brigham Young in the 1870s – is bound to attract interest. Personal items connected to the religious icon are hard to come by and are rarely seen at auction. In addition to his work with the LDS Church, Young (1801-1877) founded Salt Lake City, was Utah's first governor and he helped found the university that now bears his name.
Along with the framed 8 inch by 10 inch photo of Walt Disney, other signed items will include a collection of presidential and political autographs and a nice collection of military, literary and presidential letters and documents. Militaria will feature weapons, badges and buttons from the estate of Robert E. (Bob) Lee, and many World War I European military posters and broadsides.
Vintage coin-op machines will include a Jennings Victoria Jackpot 5-cent coin-op, a Mutoscope machine, slot machines, a horse racing machine and a rare Lillianette cigar cutter. World's Fair items will feature a 1964 New York World's Fair tin sign, a large 1939 New York World's Fair flag and more. Also sold will be a 1940s Fred Johnson “Past & Present” circus sideshow banner.
The auction will also feature a wonderful collection of posters and ephemera from the famous New York City bar and restaurant Bill's Gay Nineties. These will include a rare Buffalo Bill poster, a pair of life-size carved minstrel statues and early 20th century boxing display photos.
Ocean liner memorabilia and travel posters will include a set of seven French Line travel posters (to be offered as one lot) and a Cunard Line tin sign. The auction will also feature a huge and elaborately carved mammoth tusk with incredible workmanship, a cigar salesman's sample label album, and a collection of modern pocket knives with many high-end pieces by better makers.
Also sold will be a collection of neon signs, a scarce Buster Brown advertising bench, a 1960s Reddy Killowatt wood cutout figural display and a large Reddy Killowatt store display banner (39 inches by 54 inches), a McGregor Happy Foot Socks advertising display, a BPR Whiskies figural advertising display, and many other desirable collectibles in various collecting categories.
