Bakalowits & Sohne "Miracle" Sputnik Chandelier in rare 36" diameter size.
Clarke Auction.

Clarke Auction’s midcentury selections have proved highly successful and desirable in 2014, and the December 14th selection continues the trend.

The furniture selections for December 14th will show some of the best items of the year and will include such exceptional works as a set of 4 hand signed Nakashima "Conoid" chairs, a set of 3 Hans Wegner for Johannes Hansen “The Chair” chairs, 2 separate Eames 670 lounge chairs in brown and black leather, a pair of very fine Paul McCobb ottomans, and a Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen vintage "Egg" Chair.

Midcentury seating selections will also bring to market a number of important international designs  including a pair of France & Son labeled lounge chairs, an Italian Renato Zevi chrome rocking chair and ottoman, a pair of Jens Risom leather upholstered club chairs, a rare Edward Wormley for Dunbar leather sofa, chairs by Baker modern and much more.

Perhaps the most important and finely executed lot to be offered on December 14th is the Austrian “Miracle” sputnik chandelier by Bakalowits & Sohne. This estate fresh and original vintage chandelier is of the highest quality craftsmanship and is of the rare 36” diameter. Many smaller examples of the piece have come to market with great success at auction, and this larger and therefore more eye-catching design should perform to an expectedly high standard.

Several other lots of midcentury lighting also show the depth of the selection. Two Italian Zero Quattro candeliers, one dripping glass fixture, and one gold plated cut ribbon form, are of the featured examples. There is also a recognizable Sciolari Lucite and chrome chandelier, a Poul Henningsen “Artichoke” chandelier, as well as a lot of Karl Springer table lamps.

Other important design elements include a rare and important experimental spray sculpture by Harry Bertoia. The 7.5” high sculpture is a mate to a similar sculpture sold at Clarke in November with good result. There will also be an original German Zeppelin form Cocktail Shaker to be offered at a proportionally reasonable estimate to potential.

There are many additional lots of quality midcentury design to be auctioned on December 14th at Clarke, as well as over 350 lots of fine art, Chinese and Asian antiques, Continental and American antiques, sterling silver, jewelry, and collectible items.
