Through his energetic sculptures, Attila Mata conjures a world of power, agency, and dynamism within geometric structure and variations in media. His oeuvre encompasses a vast array of materials, including but not limited to wood, bronze, aluminum, stainless steel, and acrylic resin. Inspired by ancient themes such as sexuality, death, and primal deities, Mata’s sculptures appear to writhe and change as the viewer circumambulates each work.

Each sculpture commands singular authority; for example, in Female Torso (2013), Mata reduces the female form nearly to abstraction while alternating between stainless steel and bronze throughout the piece. Salient angles, clean lines, and geometric forms twist and curl around each other in a nearly austere manner. Mata’s women are unapologetic, auspicious, and emanate sovereignty and agency from his audience. While Female Torso’s structure appears somewhat fragmented, works such as Love demonstrate an organic fluidity of motion and negative space as turquoise tinted pipettes of bronze twirl and dance around each other with no clear beginning or end. The artist currently resides in Hungary.
