Magnificent Brutalist Sconce Lot

Early indications reveal mixed metal among the possible winners in Clarke Auction's design selection for December 6th.

The important works range from well known artists, like Harry and Val Bertoia, to magnificent sculptural works by unidentified craftsmen. Two of the Bertoia lots span two generations and include an example by Harry Bertoia's experimental spray series. Several of the smaller versions of the "Spray" sculpture that Bertoia is well known for have come to market with great success. The particular piece featured in the December 6th sale will hold a $2,000/$3,000 estimate and will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity by the Bertoia Foundation.

Val Bertoia Sound Sculpture

Bertoia is also often well recognized for his Sonambient sound sculptures, and Clarke will offer a continuation of the concept that was executed by Val Bertoia. The piece offered on December 6th has multiple bronze rods mounted to a square base in the shape of two connected circles. The rods have a pliable quality due to their extended length and create a magnificent and pulsating sound when set in motion. The sculpture has the legacy of Harry Bertoia with the continuing notability of being created by Val Bertoia. The estimate will be $3,000/$4,000.

The streamlined artistic and sensory qualities of the Bertoia metal works are juxaposed by a number of pieces from a 5th Ave, NYC collector's estate. The mixed metal pieces include a magnificent Sconce and candleholder lot that feature a central circular steel brutalist candle holder to be sold together with matching pair of concave and organic brutalist wall mounted candle stands. The $1,000/$1,500 estimate does not quite reflect the level of quality craftsmanship evident in the pieces. The same estate has several items to compliment the sconces including a central brutalist steel podium and a center table with mounted textured and sculptural plaques. The works are currently unidentified but mirror the effects of early German brutalism.

Mixed metal may be the highlighted works offered in the design selection, but there are many pieces to be offered on December 6th that compare directly in value and style. A Tommi Parzinger queen size four poster bed, estimated $3,000/$5,000, will be one of the featured midcentury furniture design pieces in the sale.

A grouping of leather Afra and Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia sofas and chairs will also be offered in the furniture selection at $1,000/$1,500. Several Dunbar style pieces including designs after Edward Wormley, an Aksel Boll Jensen drop side desk,  and a Saporiti lounge chair will all round out the furniture highlights.

In American design, two lots of George Nelson for Herman Miller CSS wall units will also be featured. Each has the same elements of construction but different aethetics when assembled, making them diverse and desirable. They will each have conservative estiamtes of $1,000/$1,500.

Many additional lots of Fine Art, Jewelry and Sterling Silver, Asian Art and Objects, and Decorative Arts will be offered by Clarke Auction on December 6th at 12 noon. The in-house previews will be held on December 4th and 5th from 12pm to 6pm EST. Previews will continue on December 6th, the day of the sale, from 10am to 12pm (start of sale).
