The New York Art, Antique and Jewelry Show held at the Park Avenue Armory, November 20-24, will be the venue for the introduction of Alan Macdonald’s art by Marion Harris. A long time exhibitor specializing in new and exciting artists, as well as early antique objects, Harris is adding Alan Macdonald’s work to this desirable mix.
Born in Malawi and now living in a small town near medieval Edinburgh, Macdonald’s meticulously crafted images are emblematic of his remote birthplace coupled with Scottish characteristics – love of nature, history, humor, beauty and surreal landscapes. Timeless and universal elements are linked - often incorporating contemporary pop culture.
The Renaissance style paintings are at once familiar and strange. The works invite close inspection as if asking us to solve an amusing, highly original puzzle. Alan acknowledges that the solution sometimes eludes him. His skill is to give us hauntingly beautiful pictorial clues which tug on our psyche while making us smile or even laugh out loud and encourage us to search for our own answers. He considers his work a visual journey with a sense of adventure and excitement.
Currently included in the landmark exhibition REALITY, Modern and Contemporary British painting alongside works by Francis Bacon and David Hockney among other standard bearers in the art world, Alan Macdonald’s work is in numerous private, public and corporate collections and was recently featured in REALIZED at The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.
