An original Frank Stella may absorb considerable attention at Clarke Auction this weekend, but a number of offerings from George Nakashima in modern design, and Tiffany & Co. in jewelry, refuse to be overlooked.

Frank Stella was once quoted, "A sculpture is just a painting cut out and stood up somewhere." The fine art selection for Sunday, March 20th, will feature a seeming epitome of such a saying, for the lacquer and oil on aluminum work come off of the media and straddles the reality between categorical labels. The work is entitled, “Bonin Night Heron."

The owner of the work originally purchased it from the Barbara Mathes Gallery of New York in 1977.  The depth and dimension created from the three dimensional aspects of the aluminum applications are quite exceptional for a work by Stella of this size. The subtle $80,000/$120,000 estimate will be the monetary guideline for a quite important work by one of the 20th Century’s most notable artists.

The modern art selection also featured a 1979 oil on wood panel by Tony Wong. The smaller work is untitled but holds onto a respectable estimate of $3,000/$5,000.

More conventional works, like the Antoine Blanchard Parisian scene oil on canvas, offered at $2,500/$3,500 will temper the modern works with more a more traditional scope. Several other paintings, including a street scene by Donald Mosher, estimated $800/$1,200, and two oils on canvas by Jacques Bouyssou of a marina and canal, echo the traditional landscape and urban portrayals of the era.

Several antique paintings, like that of one attributed to Philipp Peter Roos, and one to Egbert Heemskerck the Elder, which are both estimated at $1,000/$1,500, will be offered earlier in the night before the modern art and print selection takes to the monitors.

Decorative arts is another quality selection in the sale and several works that are of value and significance will be shown for sale. Again, the selection will begin with a more contemporary aesthetic in the presentation of the 2007 sculpture entitled “Modele X,” by Michel Francois. The metal, plaster and fluorescent painted coil form creation is highly original and is accompanied by certificate of authenticity. There will be a modest $1,000/$1,500 estimate to the piece.

Other unique works include 3 mixed media mechanic and kinetic sculptures by Dr. Jerry Jacobsen. The items are grouped in a single lot of $400-$600 but should top that with their interactive artistic combination of sights, sounds, and colors.

From the same collector’s estate, some of the most important sculpture of the sale will be auctioned. The matched pair of 19th Century recumbent marble lions are the feature of the sculpture offerings and will be sold at an estimate of $3,000/$5,000. The pair are exquisitely crafted and of the highest quality.

Several other figures, including a Cesare Lapini marble sculpture “Rebecca at the Well” ($6,000/$9,000), antique marble figure of Moses ($1,500/$2,500), a pair of 19th century marble angels ($3,000/$5,000), and several others will be sold on the 20th of March at Clarke.

Other collectibles and memorable items in the decorative selection include a $4,000/$6,000 estimated “Duck Baby” bronze sculpture after Edith Baretto Parsons, a vintage Seeburg Juke Box, a vintage Coca Cola Vendolator, and a John Deere 360/ 870 tractor.

The jewelry selection will begin later in the sale, but with no exception to excellence. The featured lot in the sale is a magnificent Emerald beaded necklace with 18kt gold clasp. The piece has a 6 strand design with emerald graduated beads, two diamonds, and a sapphire with diamond accents. The necklace is estimated conservatively with a $2,500/$3,000 tag.

The beauty of jewelry continues with a Tiffany & Co. pearl, platinum, and diamond necklace estimated $4,000/$6,000. The four strand pearl necklace is stamped Tiffany & Co. Platinum and weights approximately 130 dwt total.  There will also be a near pair of gold bracelets to be sold together, and a single Art Deco rings, all with estimates of $4,000/$6,000.

Another fantastic jewelry offering is a pair of Seaman Schepps shell form earrings. They are carved in a shell shape with 14kt gold rope detailing. The estimate is slightly more responsible at $1,500/$1,500.

Perhaps the most attention of the selection rests in some of the Sterling lots. A magnificent pair of Georg Jensen Pomegranate Candelabra will be offered at an estimate of $8,000/$12,000. There will also be a full service for 12 of Georg Jensen Acorn pattern flatware, estimate $4,000/$6,000.

The midcentury and modern design selection will also have a number of important pieces including a suite of George Nakashima. The first and earliest piece, from 1961, is a large 7 foot Engligh walnut slab top coffee table, estimate $8,000/$12,000. A double dresser from 1966 with a free edge slab top will also be offered at the same estimate. More Nakashima options include a single dresser from 1971 will be featured at $3,000/$5,000, a set of four captain’s chairs will also be presented at the same estimate, a turned leg center table for $1,000/$1,500, and a magnificent black walnut side table, estimated $4,000/$6,000. Each is from a single estate and they each be accompanied by original documentation and letter of authentication from the studio.

Other designers featured in the sale are Ray and Charles Eames for Herman Miller, John Caldwell for Brown Saltman, Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates, Vladimir Kagan, Paul Evans for Directional, Ico & Luisa Parisi, Danish modern, American modern, and more.

Asian works will include a number of quality porcelain lamps and figures, carved furniture and figures, cloisonné, enamel, framed artwork and more.
