British artist Julian Opie was born in 1958. His works have a high recognition value. In portraits in particular, he uses a computer program to reduce the facial features to the essentials with black contour lines, without losing the characteristic idiosyncrasy of the person portrayed.

The artist has been one of the most important representatives of English contemporary art for almost three decades.

In his works he deliberately explores the boundaries of stylization. What they have in common is their symbolism, the clear outlines, the lines and the monochrome color scheme.

Stylistically, the works are reminiscent of Pop Art. However, Julian Opie is less interested in the themes of mass communication. He is interested in the manifold possibilities of representation offered by the new media and media technologies. He makes use of the computer, the means of digital image processing, the manifold possibilities of combination, and employs the most elaborate printing techniques, often in three dimensions with the help of collages. He has developed his own universal visual and formal language of the modern world. It is the form that gives the content its meaning. The immediately recognizable, universal language of his art is unique and understandable worldwide.

From 1979 to 1982 Julian Opie studied at Goldsmiths College, London. His works are in the most important public collections worldwide, including the Neues Museum in Nuremberg in 2003, the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2011 and the Helsinki Art Gallery in Finland in 2015, as well as MoMA in New York, the British Museum in London or MoMAT in Tokyo. In 2001 he received the Music Week CADS, Best Illustration Award for his album cover design for Best of Blur.
