The Trustees of the Saint-Gaudens Memorial will present an exhibition of the life and work of Augusta Homer Saint-Gaudens, showing in the Picture Gallery at the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish,New Hampshire. Augusta Homer Saint-Gaudens: Stepping Out of the Shadows is on view from July 20 – September 2, 2019.

Augusta Homer Saint-Gaudens (1848–1926), was the wife of the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848– 1907). She trained as a painter in Rome, spent many years managing the studio and business of her husband, and with their son, Homer Saint-Gaudens (1880–1958), provided the impetus for incorporating the Memorial in 1919. With the incorporation of the Memorial, she converted the home, gardens, and studios in Cornish, New Hampshire, along with the collection of art, from a place of private ownership into one that visitors could learn from and enjoy—as they do today at the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park. She particularly wanted students and young sculptors to learn about Saint-Gaudens’s creative process, to support the work of American artists, and to preserve the legacy of her late husband.

This year is the centennial of the incorporation of the Saint-Gaudens Memorial by the state of New Hampshire, and the Memorial and Park have organized an exhibition devoted to the life and work of Augusta Saint-Gaudens. The exhibition includes paintings from her early career, clothing, books and objects, documents and photographs from her life and the early years of the Cornish estate and the Memorial.

There is an accompanying publication with essays by the exhibition's curator Henry J. Duffy and art historian Kathryn Greenthal.

There will be a reception on Saturday, July 20, 4:30–6:00 p.m., with a curator’s talk at 4:30 p.m. The Picture Gallery is located at the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, 139 Saint-Gaudens Road, Cornish, New Hampshire.
