Leading London Art Tech Start-Up Recognised For The Best Art App/Experimental App
Fans Can Vote Online to Help ArtPassport Win Internet’s Top Honor
ArtPassport, the app that lets you tour some of the art world’s greatest exhibitions from the comfort of your home has has been nominated for the best art app in the 22nd Annual Webby Awards.
Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), is the leading international awards organisation honoring excellence on the Internet.
ArtPassport launched in September 2017 and is a free app that offers anyone, anywhere, access to high resolution images and 360-degree panoramic views of contemporary art from the world's leading galleries and art museums. The deceptively simple app presents a regularly updated feed of exhibitions with panoramas, images of individual works, descriptive texts on the artists and visitor information. Users can zoom in on art they are interested in and press a Virtual Reality icon to use a Google Cardboard headset for a more immersive experience.
The technology works by taking 360-degree photo spheres – multiple images taken from a single viewpoint with a very wide-angle lens – which are then processed, joined together and viewed through a special interface, either via the app or on the website. The resulting high-res images can be panned around on a computer, viewed on a phone, or slotted into a viewer for the full VR experience.
ArtPassport was voted in the top 25 apps of 2017 by TIME Magazine, received 25,000 downloads in the first week after going in the appstore in May 2017 and has now had more than 40,000 downloads.
Nominees like ArtPassport are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet,” said Claire Graves, Executive Director of The Webby Awards. “It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the over 13,000 entries we received this year.
Founder Tristram Fetherstonhaugh, CEO and Founder of GalleriesNow said ‘We have always been about helping more people to see and discover more art. There's a world of fantastic exhibitions put on by commercial galleries and art museums, and the 360 technology that ArtPassport uses is the by far the best way to experience the shows you might not otherwise see and as a taster for ones you are planning to visit.
We’ve had a truly great response from the art world, collectors, curators and people who just want to discover more about art. We are really excited about the potential and have great plans!'
ArtPassport is all about helping more people to see more art. As a nominee, ArtPassport is also eligible to win a Webby People’s Voice Award, which is voted online by fans across the globe. From now until April 19th, ArtPassport fans can cast their votes at
