Sandra Muss's new series Permutations will be on view at Volta NY (Booth C5) presented by OCP during Armory Arts Week, March 1 – 5, 2017. Muss transforms seven 19th Century industrial doors that are marked by decades of factory life into gateways to other dimensions. Press preview will be March 1 from 5-7 pm followed by a VIP Vernissage from 7-10 pm. Volta NY is located at Pier 90, West 50th Street at 12th Avenue, New York, NY.

With Permutations, Muss reasserts herself as a visual alchemist who evokes the different pathways we take throughout our lives with her doors. The work represents new life experiences, both spiritual and emotional. Each door holds the potential to bring us love, growth, and life-transforming opportunities.

The theme of doors and openings reoccurs in Muss’ sculptures and paintings. Openings and spaces in her work connote possibility, the potential to enter into new realms and transcend quotidian experience. The artist weaves her insights learned from studying shamanism and Kabbalah into the work to create gateways to greater knowledge of the universe and one’s self.

Throughout her work, Sandra Muss explores the mysteries of life, the magical characteristics of light, and the strength of the elements in her multimedia work, which ranges from large-scale paintings and assemblages to site-specific installations. Inspired by her travels to such diverse places as New Zealand, the Arctic Circle, the Nā Pali Coast in Hawaii, and the Dordogne River Valley in France, Muss transposes the ethos of a site onto her canvas with oil, paint, and found materials. Bird feathers, tortoise shells, flowers, horseshoes, building rubble, whale bones, wood, and more enhance the texture of her layered works while creating a sense of time and transformation.

Muss assembles objects from all over the world to create large works that depict her explorations, both internal and external. The sculptures and canvases become portals into the worlds where she has journeyed.

About VOLTA NY

VOLTA NY is the invitational fair of solo artist projects and is the American incarnation of the original Basel VOLTA show, which was founded in 2005 by three art dealers as a fair "by galleries, for galleries".

Since its debut in New York in 2008, Artistic Director Amanda Coulson re-conceived the format as a rigorously curated, boutique event — along the lines of a sequence of intense studio visits versus a traditional trade show environment. Since then VOLTA NY showcases relevant contemporary art positions from emerging international artists, from cutting-edge trendsetters to next year’s rising stars. Coupled with its approachable solo-booth format, the VOLTA team has created a fair that is both accessible to younger art-lovers and beloved by seasoned collectors alike. By spotlighting artists through primarily solo projects, VOLTA NY refocuses the art fair experience back to its most fundamental point: the artists and their works. A beacon for creative discovery during Armory Arts Week, VOLTA NY is likewise aligned with some of the best and boldest local cuisine and design collaborators in the city.
