NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Maria Beykirch in Spring Awakenings. The exhibition opens April 28, 2018 and runs through May 18,  2018 with an opening reception on Thursday, May 3 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

About the Artist

German artist Maria Beykirch creates bold gouache abstractions on paper, layering pigments with collaged materials to create vivid compositions. Drawing from nature, personal stories, and music, the artist’s paintings are meditations on contrasts — lightness and darkness, movement and still, chaos and calm. These opposing forces create powerful tensions that capture vast ranges of human emotions in pictorial form.

In her works, Mrs. Loth and Sommerkleid, the artist applies floating swaths of rich color against a neutral background. Simultaneously abstract and bodily, the shapes take on life and stand in stark juxtaposition to the ghostly etched and thinly painted lines that fill the remainder of the compositions. Meanwhile, Silent Letter and Nar take on a graphic quality with jumbled letters and askew ellipses painted in thick, bold black. The repeated symbols appear to be simultaneously emerging from the void and sinking into darkness. Finally, Bosco Biati mimics musical staff paper, with black lines breaking the picture plane into five measured parts. Bright patches of textured pigment hint at the synesthetic transmutation of music into emotive color.
