The Ann Korologos Gallery presents the work of acclaimed printmakers Leon Loughridge and Joel Ostlind in the upcoming “Works on Paper” exhibition. Opening with an artists’ reception on December 11, 5 to 7 pm., the exhibit will feature etchings and woodblock prints on paper.
According to gallery Director Julia Novy, “Both artists are masters who know how to use paper to its greatest effect.” Loughridge’s works are reduction style woodblocks hand-printed on a 1920 Vandercook Flatbed Letterpress. Ostlind’s medium is copperplate etchings. Both require both finely honed drawing skills and the mastery of old and venerable print methods.
Raised in the open ranch land of Northern New Mexico, Leon Loughridge developed an affinity for the Southwestern landscape. His vision was influenced by his grandmother’s involvement in Northern New Mexico art circles. After purchasing his first letterpress in 1998, he received immediate success with the woodblock prints he produced. The layering of color in the process uniquely captures the atmosphere and depth of the Southwestern landscape.
Loughridge’s Dry Creek Art Press publishing company produces his woodblocks and limited edition books. His work is in collections in the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Public Library, and the Colorado History Museum. He was selected to be the featured artist for the 2005 Colorado Mountain Landscape Exhibition and Sale; his work was also included in the American Masters 2015 show at the Salmagundi Art Club in New York.
Wyoming native Joel Ostlind is a self-taught artist who spent much of his life on horseback, herding cattle in the American West. He always carried a sketchbook conveying his intimate understanding of the land with exquisite detail and authenticity. In 1990, Ostlind signed up for a printmaking class at Sheridan College and his drawings found new life as copper plate etchings depicting the full range of Western life—from Native American lodges to contemporary fly fishermen, telemark skiers and grazing horses.
Ostlind’s prints were exhibited in a 2005 solo show at Bradford Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming. He was the featured artist at the 2002 Coors Western Art Show and the subject of a 2005 article in Southwest Art magazine.
“Works on Paper” will be on view at the Ann Korologos Gallery through January 4, 2016. View the exhibition. For more information, please visit the gallery at 211 Midland Avenue in Basalt, or call (970) 927-9668.
