New York, NY-- The Fourth Annual Governors Island Art Fair is in its final week, and the event's organizers plan to close out this major exhibition and the island's summer months with artistic flair. The public is invited to join the 4heads arts group and 120 exhibiting artists on September 25 from 11am - 6pm for the Governors Island Art Fair Grand Finale.
In addition to being the last chance this year to wander the historic military barracks filled with contemporary art, the day will be full of special events and activities. Artists will be painting live on site. Hula hoop diva Stephanie DiPolito will perform, and The Free Art Society will host a hula hooping workshop in which participants make their own hoops and then learn how to swing them in style. Cyclists hoping to enjoy the final hours of scenic bike riding on Governors Island this year can join in the bike decorating party (bring a roll of tape to share and bedeck your ride). Finally, Mamarazzi will keep things moving with a six piece band, a dance team, a rhymer, and funky afro-pop grooves.
The Governors Island Art Fair is free and open to the public on weekends through September 25, 2011 (11am – 4pm on Fridays and 11am - 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays). The fair occupies Building 12, sections D, E, H, I and P on Governors Island. Refreshments will be available: fresh Two-Boots pizza and po’boys as well as beer and wine.
Governors Island is accessible by a free 7-minute ferry ride from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street) in Lower Manhattan or a 3-minute ferry ride from Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 (at the end of Atlantic Avenue, at Columbia Street) in Brooklyn. On Fridays, there is no free ferry service from Brooklyn, but there is a paid East River ferry.
