Myers Contemporary will be showcasing Susie Lee at Miami Arts Week. Susie Lee's video portraits "Still Lives" will be on view at the entrance to Red Dot Miami.
Susie Lee has a strong background in both the sciences and the arts and brings a curious and adventurous mind to her art. With experience in media ranging from clay, paper, sand, water, light, burning twine, and Bach, Lee continues to poetically advance her work with an audacious sense of creative advenutre. Exploring the ever-fascinating portrait concept, Susie Lee captures minutes of time while commenting on historical connections.
The portraits at Miami Arts Week, entitled "Still Lives," include pieces from her installation with seniors as well as a commissioned piece. About the work with residents of a retirement home, Lee says, "In presenting the residents at stages in life that are already less in motion, the work hovers as nearly a still image and then, reveals a reality beyond the single snapshot. The accretion of quiet gestures marks time as physical integrity begins to wear down, focus fades in and out, and there is the struggle to maintain."
"All of the portraits find a dialogue--compositionally and emotionally--by these works of art, but the artifacts, positions, and gestures are uniquely the person within the portrait. Like all depictions, there is a certain type of "falseness" as we point the lights and camera to the subject, but it is a falsehood that does not invalidate a desire for a realness and truth that we bring to portraiture as audience, artist, and subject," says Lee.
Susie Lee is taking commissions for new video portraits. Half an hour of film is half an hour in each person's life; the timeline is not edited to freeze or slow down.
According to Mark Myers, of Myers Contemporary, "Lee's portraits are thoughtfully provocative, skillfully polished and hauntingly beautiful."
Myers will be introducing more of its featured artists for Miami Arts Week over the next week. The Myers artists being featured in Miami Arts Week share an ability to use media in new and intellectually compelling ways that prompts the viewer to participate more actively in the artistic experience.
