MAKE / CREATE is a unique showcase of site-specific colloborative works by 13 pairs of artists and craft scholars who have worked together to share skills and concepts at London’s The Crypt Gallery. Crafts range from leather work to stone masonry, dolls house making and glass blowing, while the artists represent the best of London's emerging contemporary scene. The spirit of the exhibition lies in the desire to demonstrate the contemporary nature and design of craft, and the craft involved in contemporary art - changing perceptions of both.

The off-site exhibition curated by Griffin Gallery in partnership with QEST (the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) will bring together 13 contemporary artists with 13 highly skilled craftsmen to create site-specific works inspired by the overarching theme of the inaugural London Craft Week; 'London's Hidden Craft'.

The skills and disciplines showcased in MAKE / CREATE range from glass blowing to leather work; one pairing will include a doll's house designer and sculptor, Trevor Cain and Nicola Dale. Cain's miniature houses are designed to emulate architectural design from particular periods, while Dale's sculptural practice uses the materiality of books. Their respective fascination with history will inform a piece of collaborative work.

Meanwhile, Melissa White's reproductions of Elizabethan wall paintings and Chantal Powell's theatrical vocabulary of the ornate Baroque have informed a collaborative work. The pair will exhibit a theatre projecting footage of California's Hearst Castle, adorned with White's fabric designs and constructed by Powell to create a theatrical facade.

The selected craftsmen and artists were placed in pairs by a judging panel that included Julia Robinson of QEST, Becca Pelly-Fry, Director of Griffin Gallery, Rebecca Byrne, Events Manager of Griffin Gallery, Steve Macleod, photographer and Director of Metro Imaging, and Richard Edwards, Visual Arts and Craft Lead for Arts Council England.
