NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Derek Brown in Chelsea International Photography Competition Exhibition. The exhibition opens February 19 and runs through February 28, 2019 with an opening reception on Thursday, February 21 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

About the Artist

Photographer Derek Brown is known for his piercing portraits of tomboys. The Tomboy Bangkok project features 65 portraits of women across the sexual identity spectrum. In Bangkok Tomboy – Jam, a young woman stares at the camera in a pair of pressed slacks with a jean jacket slung over her shoulders. Confident and prideful, she defies traditional notions of female beauty.

Forging a personal connection with his subjects, Brown shows us the power of breaking with societal norms, giving women like Jam the freedom to tell their own story in front of the camera.
