Andy Warhol’s celebrated Campbell's Soup Box (Chicken Rice), 1986, sold for $293,000 – nearly twice expectations – in Heritage Auctions’ Modern & Contemporary Art Auction, Part II. The Nov. 14 auction concluded the firm’s fall Modern & Contemporary Art auctions. Sales surpassed $7.3 million and set a house record.

“We presented interesting works by today’s most sought-after artists. The results prove Heritage is a strong competitor in this market,” said Frank Hettig, Director of Modern & Contemporary Art at Heritage Auctions. “We have high expectations for next season and are excited to present collectors with some of the best work on the market.”

Earlier this season, Heritage launched its first Modern & Contemporary Art Auction in New York as the first auction in a two-part sale. Part I realized more than $3.8 million on 21 lots. Part II in Dallas surpassed $3.4 million, predominately from Post-War artworks. Many classics by Warhol surpassed expectations.

Leading a large selection of important Post-War art, Sleeping Figure (J-L-16-66), 1966, by Conrad Marca-Relli sold for $137,000; Xanor, 1979, by Victor Vasarely, sold for $68,750; and Phenomena Spiral Cauldron, 1979, by Paul Jenkins sold for $68,750, making its auction debut after more than 35 years in a private collection.

In the afternoon session of Modern and Contemporary Prints, Warhol’s Chanel (from Ads), 1985, sold for $149,000 against a $60,000 estimate, and John Wayne (from Cowboys and Indians), 1986, sold for $106,250, against a $40,000 estimate setting a record for the image. Shoes, 1980 a screenprint in colors with diamond dust, ended at $100,000; Rebel without a Cause (James Dean) (from Ads), 1985, closed at $87,500; while Forms in Space, 1985, by Roy Lichtenstein ended at $68,750, doubling expectations.
