Rare and Important Ming Period Gilt Buddha to Star in 888 Auctions’ First Autumn Sale

Richmond Hill, ON – 888 Auctions’s first autumn sale of Important Chinese Bronzes & Traditional Paintings will showcase 478 lots featuring an exciting array of Chinese Buddhist will be held at 888 Auctions’ saleroom gallery September 11th  and will begin at 2 p.m (EST).

Highlighting the autumn sale will be a Rare and Important Ming Period Gilt Buddha at Lot 269. This rare Chinese Ming Dynasty gilt bronze Buddha figure is seated cross-legged on a lotus plinth and wearing a crown; standing 36 cm and hailing from a prominent private Canadian collection, it commands a $75,000 high estimate.

Another gilt bronze Buddhist deitiy can also be found at Lot 268. The Chinese Qing Dynasty Gilt Bronze Buddha stands only 7 cm but is expected to exceed its &8,000 high estimate.

Collectors of stone and jade carvings need not wait long for quality items to be placed on the clock; from the collection of jade carvings, bidders will be pleased to find the inclusion of a Chinese Emerald Green Jadeite Carved Bangle at Lot 189 (High Estimate: $4,000) and a Chinese Celadon White Jade Carved Vase with stand at Lot 138. Lot 138 is particularly noteworthy for its naturalistic openwork rendered carving of morning glory and foliage with lotus leaves and is expected to exceed its high estimate of $8,000.

Lot 132: Chinese Tianhuang Stone Carved Seal Signed Wang Ge Yi (High Estimate: $50,000)

A Tianhuang stone carved seal can be found at Lot 132. Dated 1938, it is signed by Wang Ge Yi; the incised script mark roughly translates: “carved in 1938 in the spring, Wang Ge Yi, carved stone. The translucent dark honey stone seal surmounted by a dragon finiale carries a $50,000 high estimate.

From 888 Auctions’ staple of paintings, collectors will find an exceptional watercolour painting signed and dated by master artist Zhang Daqian. Inscribed with the title, ‘Wuxia Mountain Clear Autumn’, this relatively early work of Zhang Daqian has been appraised by Chinese Paintings specialist Wanming Zheng and is also accompanied with a book which features the famous painting as well as other famous Chinese fine art paintings. Lot 31 commands an $800,000 high estimate and expected to garner a great deal of attention.

Other traditional Chinese brush-wash paintings are featured in the following lots:

Lot 1: Chinese Watercolour Eagle Painting on Scroll (High Estimate: $10,000)

Lot 21: Chinese Watercolour Painting Signed Li Xiong Cai (High Estimate: $$1,500)

Lot 28: Painting of Lady in Courtyard Signed Chen Mei (High Estimate: $4,000)

From the natural history collection of items in the sale, collectors will be delighted to find a very rare and fresh to market, Large Colombian Cognar Amber at Lot 431. Certified by a professional gemologist, this outstanding natural piece carries a $3,000 high estimate.

Considering the enormous dearth of quality period porcelains, Lot 323 will be sure to raise a few eyebrows. Lot 323 features a Daoguang Mark and Period Famille Verte Enameled Porcelain Saucer. The auspiciously cabbage and butterfly decorated saucer has been conservatively set with a high estimate of $6,000.
