NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Alexander Ossipov (TOTUR) in Heaven and Earth. The exhibition opens April 5, 2018 and runs through April 25, 2018 with an opening reception on Thursday, April 5 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.
About the Artist
Alexander Ossipov (TOTUR) creates dense and detailed oil paintings combining myth and memory, earthly and divine. The artist distorts and stylizes his subjects, paring them down to geometric forms and blocks of color. Allegorical figures and animals are fractured and reassembled in shallow compositions, the pigmented planes and facets flattened onto the picture plane.
In Ossipov’s The Abduction of Europe, a nude female figure and a bull’s head share a cosmic space. Without a horizon, the two float in an uncomfortable space, the floundering, twisted body reaching in vain for the animal. The Trinity. Guests features three figures that allude to the holy trinity. Dressed in abstracted and heavily patterned robes with Byzantine halos of light radiating from their heads, the three holy figures take on the appearance of stained glass. Finally, Ossipov’s The Two Moons depicts an allegorical horned figure alongside an unidentified anthropomorphic shape, each patterned with stripes of earthy color. In the background, two turquoise and brick red orbs slice across a black ground, creating a sense of dueling opposition.
