NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Ashley Hanson in Discovery: Contemporary Art Perspectives from England. The exhibition opens November 10 and runs through December 1, 2018 with an opening reception on Thursday, November 15 from 6-8 pm. About the Artist

Artist Ashley Hanson reimagines the city of New York as a colorful labyrinth of slanting lines in his series City of Glass. Taking inspiration from the written word, the artist imposes his feelings and imagination onto the streets and buildings displayed on a map. Hanson fuses the mysteries of his subconscious with the physical reality that surrounds him, blurring the lines between truth and fiction.

Every painting in the series draws the viewer in with vibrant splashes of color. The artist uses a wet-on-wet approach to oil painting, layering sheets of liquid color, refined and cut with brush and knife or left pure, hovering on the surface. In City of Glass 63, an intense sliver of dark blue paint becomes Central Park, grounding the viewer in reality, while chaotic fields of color subvert the viewer’s expectations, forcing them to take a second look. In City of Glass 30, Grand Central morphs into a starry celestial plane, creating a bridge between this world and the next. Hanson asks us to reckon with the differences between what is true and what we believe to be true.
