Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) announced a new exhibition, Late Nights and Dr. Pepper: The Art of Robert Rodriguez. Opening November 5th and running through December 15th at LCAD Gallery. The collection is a retrospective compilation of work that spans four decades of the late nights, tight deadlines, country music and non-stop creative efforts that represents the life of acclaimed illustrator, Robert Rodriguez.

The opening reception of Late Nights and Dr. Pepper will take place from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. during Laguna Beach First Thursday Art Walk on November 5th at LCAD Gallery, 374 Ocean Avenue.

Fueled by Dr. Pepper and singing the siren song of Illustration, “All I’m takin’ is your time, help me make it through the night” Rodriguez pays homage to the artistic elegance of the past with his keen sense of design, color and typography while still forging ahead into the 21st Century.

Among his credits is the image of the Quaker and pinup calendars for 3M tape and General Tires, as well as the breakout poster campaign for the HBO series, Boardwalk Empire. Rodriguez has also done many special edition stamps for the United States Postal Service including Cinco de Mayo, Cesar Chavez, the Celebrate the Century 1980’s series, and the Cowboys of the Silver Screen series.
"As long as I don't focus on the idea that a retrospective is a ‘summing up’ of my career in art, that's great," said Rodriguez, who will be adding sculpture and paintings to the collection. "Art is a wonderful way to spend a life. Art is a constant learning process and once something is mastered, you move onto something new. It never gets old for artists. If it does, they’re doing it wrong."

Rodriguez hopes that seeing a cohesive body of his work will inspire new directions for him to take.

The exhibition is coordinated by LCAD Illustration Professor, Jason Dowd; LCAD Gallery Director, Andrea Harris-McGee; and Robert Rodriguez.

"I have great respect for Bob as an artist and illustrator. He is a bridge from the traditional days of creating everything by hand to the new days of digital artwork," said Dowd, who first met Rodriguez when he was a student at Art Center College of Design. "LCAD students will benefit greatly from his more than four decades of professional experience. From large and glamorous posters showcasing Tales of the Cocktail, to intimate figures of chefs cooking, all will be delighted with his imaginative and inspired artistry."

LCAD Gallery is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. For additional information, please visit www.lcad.edu or call 949-376-6000.
