Vose Galleries is pleased to present the exhibition Light & Color: 150 Years on Paper, Featuring Frank W. Benson and His Contemporaries. The exhibition features over fifty paintings and drawings by important American painters who chose to focus their talents on such mediums on paper as charcoal, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and oil. Many of these artists were pioneers in exhibiting their works on paper as finished paintings in prominent national exhibitions as early as the 1870’s.
Examples by artists who set early standards in the mediums include Winslow Homer (1836-1910), Walter Launt Palmer (1854 –1932), Frederick Childe Hassam (1859 –1935), Theodore Wendel (1859 –1932), and Laura Coombs Hills (1859 –1952). The exhibition also features five watercolors by the famed teacher and artist Frank W. Benson (1862-1951) who greatly influenced the next generation of New England painters, such as Aiden Lassell Ripley (1896 – 1969), John Whorf (1903 – 1959) and Lilian Westcott Hale (1880 - 1963). Juxtaposed alongside these traditional painters are more progressive artists such as Charles Hopkinson (1869 –1962), Reynolds Beal (1867-1951), Richard Hayley Lever (1876 –1958), and Millard Owen Sheets (1907-1989). Accompanied by new paintings and drawings from members of Vose Galleries’ Contemporary Realist Division this exhibition spans over 150 years and touches upon a large variety of styles and subject matter. A selection of the works on paper in this exhibition will be illustrated in a publication available for purchase, with the entirety of the expansive show viewable April 21st-May 26th, 2018.
