About the Artist
Becky Sungja Kim paints dream-like landscapes in a restrained, tonal palette, simplifying forms to create colorful abstractions of the natural world. Her scenes depict lucid dreams and childhood memories with compositions ranging from idyllic pastoral scenes to hazy, fantastical vistas. Stripped to their essentials, Kim’s paintings reveal our emotional ties to landscapes, both real and imagined.
In works such as The Homeland, Field in Virginia, and Greeting Santa Fe, Kim images the splendor of nature with the quick, expressive dabs and strokes typified by plein air painting. Indeed, the artist frequently paints the play of light in the natural world rather than the shapes composing the landscape, imbuing her works with subjectivity. Oil paintings including Cool Breeze and Ginkgo Tree depict a more illusory world in which trees take on an independent character or spirit. Naturalism is eschewed and fantasy is embraced in these simplistic works that imagine the world with playful irreverence. Finally, in her painting Spring Rain, Kim strips all recognizable features from her composition, depicting only the elusive, soaking, enveloping sensation of a downpour.
Becky Kim grew up in South Korea and lives in northern Virginia near Washington, D.C.
