Ann Korologos Gallery presents Seasons of the West: Winter, a group exhibition capturing the illustrious colors, textures, and moods of snow featuring renowned artists Peter CampbellEwoud de GrootMichael FainSimon WinegarDan Young, among others. The exhibition will open with an Artists’ Reception on Thursday, January 17th from 5 to 7PM at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt with artist remarks at 6PM.

“Winter is the season to see the raw structure of the West, a time where the flowers and foliage fall away, and we are left with soft light, stark contrasts, and a peaceful world blanketed with snow,” shares gallery owner, Ann Korologos.  “Each artist represents the season in a way that shows what they love most about the season, and it’s surprising to see how varied their passions are—a contrast that speaks to the diversity of the West.”

Peter Campbell moved to Colorado after studying at the Savannah College of Art & Design. Campbell’s paintings reflect his direct connection with the landscape, and convey an intimate and personal reaction to nature. A limited color palette and omission of details results in a dream-like mood, open to each viewer’s interpretation as he captures the serenity of snow, meandering rivers, or the light on bare winter trees.

Michael Fain is a long-time resident of Aspen, Colorado. Michael has been a photographer for over 60 years, but really engaged in the practice after he went digital and evolved the scope and tone of his images to a sophisticated blend of representational and abstract. The semi-abstract style of his snow-covered mountains, with their mystical, “other worldly” quality, is influenced by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. His canyon scenes are enhanced via his skill with chiaroscuro, the juxtaposition of light and shadow.

Ewoud de Groot (pronounced A-VOWED) lives and works in Egmond aan Zee, a coastal village in the Northern Netherlands. From elegant snowy owls perched in position, to serene scenes of Sandhill cranes, to impressive wildlife such as elk and moose, de Groot paints his passions: birds, game, water and light. His images are refined, elegant compositions, paired with dreamy backgrounds of “pulsating, magnetic shimmer.”

Simon Winegar is a Utah-based painter inspired by his love for the outdoors and its natural beauty, including man-made additions such as weathered barns and grazing cattle. While his subjects vary, he most enjoys painting en plein air, and “creating moods that are often romantic and thought-provoking,” reflects the artist. Winegar’s impressionist landscapes are meant to beautify the world and move the viewer.

Dan Young is a Colorado native, whose paintings depict beloved locations and favorite pastimes of the West. Over the years Young has mastered the challenges inherent in painting on location, regardless of the season. He is especially adept at conveying snow’s prismatic colors. Young’s work feels familiar to those who know the wild of the West, sometimes taking the viewer right back to an experience and place through his practice as a keen observer.
