LYNBROOK, N.Y. – A new find copy of Batman #1, graded 7.5 out of 10, could possibly reach or exceed $100,000 and a copy of Batman #2 in even better shape at an incredible 9.2 is expected to realize $20,000-$30,000 at Philip Weiss Auctions’ Sunday, Feb. 15 sale of comics, comic art and sports items, in the firm’s gallery at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, starting at 10 a.m. EST.

Hundreds of fresh-to-the-market lots will cross the auction block that day, headlined by a pair of important comic book collections. One collection, out of western Massachusetts, is packed with vintage copies of Detective Comics. Another collection features copies of Superman #2-#11 and Action Comics #18-#39, with #25 and #30 graded CBCS 9.4 and #36 and #36 CBCS graded 9.0.

“The copies of Batman #1 and Batman #2 will get a lot of attention, but collectors need to know we will also have thousands of other Golden, Silver and Modern Age comics,” said Philip Weiss of Philip Weiss Auctions. “We have large collections of comics from the 1950s through the ‘80s, including Westerns, funnies, horror and more, plus many DC titles, Marvel and independents.”

The auction will also feature three original comic art collections, two of them from the estates of the artists themselves. Included will be a great selection of comic strip art from the 1920s-1960s, such as an original Peanuts daily drawn by Charles Schulz in 1967, a 1972 Prince Valiant comic page by John Cullen Murphy and a Dick Tracy 1970 Sunday comic strip page by Chester Gould.

The animation section will feature approximately 100 lots, to include wonderful production cels from Disney, like the Alice, Queen and King of Hearts cel from Alice in Wonderland on a “pan” (panoramic) background, a Snow White cel on a Courvoisier background, a Donald Duck 1940s cel on a hand-prepared background and a Figaro and Cleo cel on a hand-prepared background.

Also sold will be a concept Peter Pan piece by David Hall from the estate of 1930s Disney artist Hal Sloane (est. $5,000-$10,000), a selection of Lord of the Rings animation cels, a Pinocchio production cel, an original cel from Disney’s 1953 The Night Before Christmas on a key master background, original animation cels, drawings by Freddie Moore, and cels from various studios.

Additional Disney items will feature a selection of Disney Classics, pin sets and other collectible material, to include a photo of Disney himself, inscribed and signed by him. Other lots worthy of mention include a sketch drawing of Frankenstein signed by Boris Karloff, an original pulp magazine painting by L.A. Shafer, Big Little Books, pulp magazines and Kinstler comic pages.

The sports sale will be highlighted by a collection of circa 1910 Turkey Red Cigarettes Tobacco Silks baseball cards, other early tobacco cards, complete Topps and Bowmans baseball card sets from the 1950s through the ‘70s, items signed by Babe Ruth, other items from Hall of Famers, signed baseballs and bats, sports photos from a lifetime collection and many non-sports cards.
