Philip-Lorca diCorcia To Speak at ArtTalks—AFA’s Lecture Series

The American Federation of Arts (AFA) is pleased to announce artist Philip-Lorca diCorcia as the first featured speaker in its 2009/10 ArtTalks series. Following the lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and a wine reception hosted by Christie’s.

About Philip-Lorca diCorcia: Philip-Lorca diCorcia (b. 1951) is known for his seemingly improvisational yet meticulously choreographed photography. His most recent solo exhibition, Thousand, which was shown at the David Zwirner Gallery earlier this year, comprised 1,000 Polaroid photographs that exemplify the precarious balance between fact and fiction that has become diCorcia’s signature. Taken over a period of twenty-five years, the photographs were praised as “technically perfect, highly personal, full of life” by Roberta Smith of The New York Times.
Born in 1951 in Hartford, Connecticut, diCorcia began studying photography at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and received a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University in 1979. DiCorcia, who currently lives in New York, has been exhibiting steadily since his work received early acknowledgement in 1993 with a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art. His work can be found in the collections of many major museums, including the Centre George Pompidou, Tate Britain, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The next ArtTalk is scheduled for Thursday, December 3, 2009, and will feature landscape painter April Gornik.
