Best Beloved and Tall Boy and I spent last week in Charleston, SC. Ostensibly I was doing my usual serious and productive field research with the Tall One as my companion and cohort in crime, and Best Beloved was attending a fishing tournament. The reality was that we wandered around in the Charleston heat, looking at the many beautiful buildings and flowers and historic sights –while constantly thinking about our next meal. We had many, many meals which were so deelish – Tall Boy kept pronouncing each one the best he had ever eaten! How is that possible? Anything is possible in Charleston.
I will attempt to describe some of our mealtime adventures for you over the next couple of weeks – with time out for flower boxes.
Our first luncheon in Charleston was the recommendation of a local – Hominy Grill. We nibbled first at the boiled peanut snack dish, but being carpet bagging Yankees, we couldn’t quite appreciate them. It was a little late in the afternoon to consider a full lunch, so Best Beloved and I shared a turkey club sandwich, while the Tall One inhaled one of his own. Thick slices of turkey, bacon and what tasted suspiciously of a home-grown tomato were artfully crammed between hefty slices of white toast. There was a smiling wait staff who bore the strains of serving lunch while a magazine photo shoot threatened to take over the homey dining room with its high tin ceiling. Everyone in the restaurant looked on with mild curiosity before falling like hungry dogs on their home-cooked delights. Yumsters.
