Max Friedrich Ferdinand Rabes (German 1868 - 1944)

Max Friedrich Rabes was born in Samter, Poland, but the family moved to Stargard/Pomerania in 1870. There is currently little biographical information available for him, but he is known to have he studied in Berlin under artist Paul Graeb and had apprenticed under decorative painter Paul Borgman. Rabe loved to travel and spent little time in Germany. He traveled throughout Europe and Scandinavia and the Orient. He had a fascination with the Orient, especially Cairo, Egypt, where and he painted numerous scenes there, capturing the people and scenery. In order to subsidize his travels, 19th Century Aritist Max Friedrich Rabes earned money by painting murals for wealthy Italian patrons and painting stage sets for theaters. He was a member of the Association of Berlin Artists and the Munich Artists Association.
