Bunmi Agusto: Escape to Within

Dada Gallery, (formerly POLARTICS) is continuing to amplify the young voices of artists from Africa and the diaspora with the presentation of Nigerian artist Bunmi Agusto’s debut solo exhibition ‘Escape to Within.’ 

The exhibition brings together an exciting body of eighteen new works, following the artist’s participation in the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair X Christie’s Paris earlier this year. Depicted in pastel pencil, chalk and mixed media, the work charts the migration of a group of figures across a labyrinthine landscape of braided forests and dark waters, illustrating the surreal world Agusto has created within her mind, titled ‘Within.’ Exploring the biological and cultural connotations of the terms ‘alien’ and ‘hybrid,’ Agusto addresses the multiplicity of her Nigerian identity, cultural consciousness and the evolution of selfhood through the lens of fantasy. 

Dada Gallery represents emerging artists of African descent, exploring wide ranging themes of youth, identity, sexuality and socio-economic issues and is committed to prioritising the international platforming of these contemporary artists. The Gallery is currently in residence at Cromwell Place and offers virtual experiences of its exhibition programme.
