David Bailey’s King’s X brings together two books - King’s Cross and Street People King’s Cross - as one slipcased limited edition, dedicated to the London area in which Bailey has lived for over 20 years.
Bailey presents a striking yet complementary contrast to the street photography of King’s Cross in Street People King’s Cross, turning his famed portraiture to the people that live on those very streets. Initially commissioned by The Big Issue in 1999, these portraits of homelessness showcase Bailey’s unsurpassed talent in capturing unexpected aspects of his subjects, challenging preconceptions with a quiet immediacy. King’s Cross meanwhile focuses on the fast-changing landscape of the area. Bailey’s relatively recent photographs – together with an insightful text by Francis Hodgson – are a testament to the ever-changing city and the stories held within.
Beautifully produced, this limited collector’s edition presents Bailey’s photography in stunning detail. Each book includes a newly commissioned text by Francis Hodgson, former photography critic for The Financial Times.
An accompanying exhibition showcasing the photographs will run from 27 September to 29 October at HENI, 1st Floor, 6-10 Lexington Street, Soho. Collectable editions of the cityscapes will be available to buy (price on enquiry), alongside the signed and numbered copies of King’s X, accompanied by a tote bag designed by Bailey.
David Bailey was born in 1938 in Leytonstone, East London. After working as fashion photographer John French’s assistant, he published his first portrait of Somerset Maugham for Today magazine in 1960 before meeting the model Jean Shrimpton whilst at Vogue. Bailey has exhibited worldwide, the first of his landmark exhibitions in 1971 at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Internationally renowned, Bailey has produced some of the most famous photographic portraits of the last six decades.
