The painting, commonly referred to as "Portrait of A Boy and His Dog," has been owned by Virginia's Executive Mansion since it was deeded in 1977 by the estate of Martha Spottswood of Petersburg, Virginia.  It portrays Colin Dunlop, born in Petersburg in 1836 and killed in battle during the Civil War in 1864.  It was recently authenticated as a painting of George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879). For decades, a mysterious 19th-century portrait of a young boy and his dog hung in the Virginia governor's mansion. The sitter and artist were unknown.
