Christie’s Impressionist and modern art sale on Wed. night was boosted by a boldly-colored fauve landscape. Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958)'s Paysage de banlieue soared to $22.5 million, almost double the artist's previous auction record of $10.8 million. Hedge fund manager Steve Cohen was the owner of the 1905 painting which had a pre-sale estimate of $18 million to $25 million. A Picasso-packed Sotheby's sale with 44 paintings, drawings and sculptures brought in $170 million for Impressionist and modern art on Tuesday evening in New York. Hefty pre-sale estimates and choosy bidders kept the sale subdued while it fell soundly within the overall pre-sale estimate ($158.9/229.7 million). Maria Ann Conelli, executive director of New York's American Folk Art Museum, announced on the museum's website on May 3 that she would be leaving in July to return to academia. The financially-troubled institution missed $3.7 million in payments to a debt service fund connected to bonds issued to construct a new building, it said in a January filing.
