American museums organized so many notable shows in 2009 that it's hard to decide which were truly outstanding, which merely excellent. "Truly outstanding" by any measure was "Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice" at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—an intelligent, elegantly installed, exhilarating examination of the complex conversation among the three giants whose work essentially defines Venetian painting.
