Late Gap founder and art collector Don Fisher wanted to build his own museum, rather than give his collection to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), but two days before he died last September, the Fishers decided to lend their collection to SFMOMA for 25 years. A growing trend to loan art to museums reflects a desire by would-be donors to retain control of their collections so that the artwork isn't "left in the basement" of institutions...
